Driver flees scene after overturning car at high speed on busy main road

Residents are calling for a clamp-down on "boy racers" after a car overturned at high speed on a busy main road.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle ran away after it flipped onto its side at the junction of Almond Drive and Malpas Road, in Newport, at about 9.40pm on Sunday night, before colliding with a traffic light and signpost denoting the 40mph speed limit.

Locals spoke of hearing a car travelling "at a stupid speed" before there was a "a few seconds of screeching and a loud bang".

One woman who lives nearby went outside to investigate the noise.

"They must have been going at some pace to end up the way they did," she said, adding that the driver had already "done a runner" by the time she'd arrived.

"Hopefully the police will look at the CCTV from the nearby petrol station and work out their exact speed."

Another resident on Facebook said: "There are boy racers flying up and down Malpas Road every night. I hope the driver is ok and learned a valuable lesson from this."

"It was was just a matter of time before there was an accident here - just grateful that no pedestrians were harmed," added a third.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision involving one car in Almond Drive, Newport at around 9.40pm on Sunday, October 10.

"Officers attended to assist with traffic management and no injuries were reported.

"Two people, believed to be the driver and passenger from the car, reportedly fled from the scene following the collision and enquiries are ongoing to identify them both.

"Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting log reference 2100356560, or send us a direct message on Facebook and Twitter.
