Driver flees after out-of-control car hits nine-year-old girl playing in her front yard

Police are searching for a driver who seriously injured a nine-year-old girl when his speeding vehicle mounted a footpath and hit her as she was playing in her front yard.

LaDerihanna Holmes was playing out the front of her house with her sister in Lithonia, a town in Georgia, when the car came ploughing towards them.

CCTV video from the scene shows the car appearing to become briefly airborne before colliding with the girl and what seems to part of the front of a house.

Two people then run away from the car as the girl's family rush to help her.

The incident was captured in footage from her family home's surveillance camera, and was shared by them in the hope it would help identify the driver.

"I want everyone to pray for LaDerihanna," the girl's mother Charlotte Bolton told ABC News America.

"I just want the people involved to be caught."

According to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with medical bills, LaDerihanna suffered a skull fracture, a broken pelvis in three places, and a leaking heart valve.

"At this current moment, she is in critical condition and the family is in need of financial assistance," a statement on the page said.

"The family is asking for any donations that can help with the medical assistance of this tragic accident."

Police said they had interviewed the owner of the car who claimed her boyfriend was driving at the time of the incident while she was working.

The family's lawyer told ABC News America there was still confusion over the true identity of the driver.

"That's the problem, the police report says it was the boyfriend, who would have been around 30, but those were teenagers that were in that vehicle," Chris Stewart said.

"So, we have to learn what happened and how they got hold of that car."
