Driver flees after crashing Audi into lamppost trying to escape police

The driver of an Audi mounted a kerb and crashed into a lamppost in a desperate attempt to evade police.

After the crash - which happened in Huyton at around 12.20pm today - the driver is said to have run from police.

Police said the Audi failed to stop and drove off from one of their patrols in Huyton House Road, before crashing.

The driver is then reported to have got out of the damaged car and fled on foot.

Officers searching the area were unable to locate the driver but the car, which had sustained considerable damage to the front, was seized.

Photographs from the crash show the lamppost lying buckled and bent across the width of the pavement and hanging over a nearby garden wall.

Merseyside Police said investigations are continuing.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm that officers were in Huyton earlier today (Monday 17 May) following a fail to stop collision.

"At around 12.20pm, an Audi was seen to drive off from patrols in Huyton House Road, colliding with a lamppost.

"The driver is reported to have left the car on foot and an area search was negative. The car has been seized and enquiries continue."
