Driver flees after causing fatal Dan Ryan crash: police

A driver left the scene after causing a fatal crash Monday on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 59th Street.

The driver of a white Ford van was speeding in the northbound express lanes at 9:40 a.m. when they struck the rear of a Hyundai stopped behind a orange maintenance vehicle with its emergency lights on, Illinois State Police said in a statement. The vehicles were stopped in the far right lane.

The white van continued forward and also hit the rear of the maintenance vehicle, which belong to the Illinois Department of Transportation, state police said. The driver of the van fled on foot.

The driver of the Hyundai, Katarina M. Goitz, 25, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, state police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released details about her death. Goitz lived in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

The driver of the IDOT vehicle was treated at a hospital, state police said. A passenger of the IDOT vehicle refused medical attention.

Lanes were reopened following an investigation at 2:50 p.m., state police said.
