A DRIVER has escaped safely after their car burned on the side of the M1 Motorway.
Firefighters were called to Somersby about 8.30am on Monday after numerous calls to Triple Zero.
They arrived to find the car well alight in the southbound breakdown lane, forcing them to close a lane of traffic as plumes of smoke billowed over passing cars.
No injuries were reported, firefighters said.
Firefighters said the road had reopened but expected some effects on traffic to linger as conditions returned to normal.
