Driver escaped van just moments before it 'burst into flames' outside Bedminster Aldi

A van driver escaped his vehicle just moments before it "burst into flames" outside a Bedminster supermarket.

A fire crew was called to North Street at around 9am this morning (April 23) following reports that a vehicle had caught fire outside Aldi .

On arrival, firefighters found a van had been badly damaged by fire and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the vehicle, which caught fire in the middle of the road.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 8.52am to North Street. One crew from Bedminster attended.

"Upon arrival they found a van damaged by fire.

"They used a high pressure hose to extinguish the fire.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be accidental."

One witness at the scene said the van "burst into flames".

"Other drivers waving and beeping at the van driver because of flames from the engine.
