Driver escaped as car went up in flames on Coast Road slip road towards Walkergate

A driver escaped before flames ripped through their car as they left the Coast Road.

The car stopped on the Benfield Road exit slip road from the A1058 west heading towards Walkergate.

Two fire engines from Gosforth and Fossway stations were called to the scene just after 12pm on Wednesday.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said the driver had been able to get out and the fire had been caused by a fault.

During the blaze, the slip road was blocked to traffic as the fire took hold of the car and thick black smoke rushed into the sky.

Traffic had already been delayed by planned roadworks on the westbound side of the A1058 between the Tyne Met College and the Wills Building.

One lane has been closed for routine maintenance works.

During the fire, Go North East bus services 309, 310 and 311 were unable to stop at the Benfield Road slip road stop towards Newcastle.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters and the crews left just after 12.45pm.
