Driver drove wrong way down A34 Kingsway, dumped his van and tried to flee on foot...but didn't get far

A driver has been arrested after a Transit van drove the wrong way down the A34 Kingsway during a police chase.

The police helicopter was drafted in after the vehicle was abandoned on the dual carriageway in Stockport and the driver tried to run from cops on foot.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the van, which had false number plates, came to the attention of officers earlier today, January 4, and a pursuit began.

GMP's traffic division said on Twitter that the van was pursued through Cheadle "where the driver drove the wrong way along the A34 briefly before abandoning the vehicle."

After a foot pursuit involving the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter, the driver was arrested, they said, adding the hashtag #teamwork to their post which also included a picture of police vehicles surrounding the van at around 10:45am.

No further details about the incident have yet been divulged at this stage.

Some drivers reported delays in the area however these are said to have quickly cleared once the incident was concluded.
