Driver ditches sausages after police chase ends in crash

A high speed police chase ended when the driver fled after crashing - but stopped to ditch a packet of sausages in a hedge.

The bizarre incident started on Saturday night (January 9) when the driver of a black Nissan Juke failed to stop for police.

Police attempted to speak to the driver shortly after 11.30pm on Windy Arbour Road in Whiston when the driver took off.

A high speed police chase followed which resulted in the driver of the Nissan crashing at the junction with Lickers Lane and Fox's Bank Lane.

Police said he was caught a short time later after fleeing the crashed car to ditch a packet of sausages in a nearby hedge.

A 33-year-old failed to provide police with a specimen of breath and was arrested for dangerous driving, theft and drink driving.

Further items of food were recovered at the scene which police said had been stolen from a local shop.
