Perth driver disqualified after being found asleep in his car clutching a bottle of vodka

Police found a man slumped in a car parked across the main road through Bridge of Earn in the dead of night clutching a drained bottle of vodka after being alerted by a passer-by.

And when 29-year-old Craig Ross Morgan was later tested for alcohol at Dundee Police Station they found he was over four times the legal drink-drive limit.

The test showed Morgan, of St Catherine’s Road, Perth, had 90 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres on his breath. The legal limit in Scotland is 22 millilitres.

Perth Sheriff Court heard this week Morgan was first discovered fast asleep in his Ford by a resident who happened upon his vehicle parked in the middle of Main Street near its junction with Manse Road and reported it to police at around 3.25am on September 17 last year.

Fiscal depute Sarah Wilkinson told the court police constables attended the scene and saw Morgan slumped in the passenger side with his eyes closed.

She added: “Constables observed a vodka bottle about a quarter full to be within the passenger side with the accused holding onto it.”

The court was told Morgan admitted ahead of a planned trial to being in control of his car while he was under the influence of alcohol and while he was on bail granted at Dundee Sheriff Court six months before he committed the crime.

Defence solicitor David Holmes said Morgan had been going through a separation at the time of the offence and had taken it badly.

Sheriff Wood disqualified Morgan from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 18 weeks. He also ordered Morgan to undertake 90 hours of unpaid work over the course of the next six months.
