Driver dead after fiery collision with truck in Tasmania's north

The driver of the small car died at the scene while the front of the truck caught fire.

Wet conditions are most likely to blame for a fatal car crash near Exeter in northern Tasmania, police believe.

A car and truck collided on Frankford Road, around 15 kilometres west of the West Tamar Highway, soon after 10:00am on Friday.

A man who was driving the small car died at the scene.

The truck driver was shaken but uninjured.

Tasmania Police Sergeant Philip Summers said from early investigations, it appeared the car lost control on a corner near the Birralee Road turnoff and collided with the flat-tray truck.

"We've got investigations continuing and we have some witnesses we need to follow up, but certainly the wet road will be a contributing factor," Mr Summers said.

"We have no indication that speed was a factor."

The impact of the collision caused the front of the truck to catch fire.

"When the truck caught fire, he [the truck driver] tried to extinguish it, however with the fire extinguisher he's got, the fire was too big," Sergeant Summers said.

Frankford Road remains closed to traffic while police investigate.
