A DRIVER had to be cut free from his vehicle after a crash in Pokolbin on Sunday
At about 3.10pm police, paramedics and rescue crew were called to a motor vehicle collision on Broke Road.
Arriving on scene, crews found a single vehicle resting off the roadway after hitting a tree.
A male occupant remained in the driver's seat trapped by compression of the legs.
The vehicle was stabilised whilst paramedics treated the man, then the team from Cessnock District Rescue Squad stepped in to cut the driver free from the car.
"The drivers door, B pillar and rear drivers side door were removed, relief cuts were made in the A pillar as well to allow for the dash board to be pushed forward to relieve the pressure off his legs," a statement from the squad said.
"Our hydraulic ram was used to push the dash forward to enable this to happen."
The man was then transferred onto a spinal board and loaded into the awaiting ambulance, which then transported him a short distance away to the Toll Rescue Helicopter. He was flown to John Hunter Hospital suffering leg and suspected spinal injuries.
"It was a great team effort by all emergency services on scene."
