Driver crashes into Sri Lankan High Commission

A Canberra driver has been charged by police after crashing into the front fence of the Sri Lankan High Commission overnight.

An ACT Policing spokesman said officers on patrol noticed a black Mitsubishi sedan that was speeding while travelling northbound on Yarra Glen just after 1.10am on Tuesday.

As well as the driver, two passengers were seen inside the speeding car.

The police officers followed the sedan on Yarra Glen towards the exit ramp to Hopetoun Circuit.

The sedan then crashed into the front fence of the Sri Lankan High Commission, causing a large amount of damage.

The driver was arrested at the scene and is set to be charged with multiple driving offences, an ACT Policing spokesman said.

They were charged with speeding, stopping in an intersection, using an unregistered or suspended vehicle and using an uninsured vehicle.

The two passengers inside the car at the time of the incident tried to escape the scene on foot.

Both passengers were later spoken to by police but were not charged.
