Fatal crash driver charged after allegedly stealing ute towing caravan to flee scene

A 40-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly stealing a ute towing a caravan to escape the scene of a fatal crash that also left two children hurt north of Perth.

Police said the woman was driving a sedan which veered onto the wrong side of Brand Highway and crashed into a truck and another car at Cataby on Saturday morning.

One of her passengers, a 41-year-old man from Karloo, died at the scene.

Two boys aged four and 10 were also in the sedan at the time, police said, but received only minor injuries.

Police allege the woman then stole a ute towing a caravan after its driver stopped to help, and drove off in the vehicle.

She was later found at a farm in Badgingarra, about 40 kilometres away.

The woman has been charged with failing to stop and provide assistance after an incident occasioning death.

She has also been charged with failing to report the incident.

Police said the charges may be upgraded.

The woman is scheduled to appear in Joondalup Magistrates Court on January 18.
