Driver caused high-speed chase on Motherwell road where schoolgirl was killed

A driver fled from police in a high-speed chase on a road where a schoolgirl was knocked down and killed.

Safety measures were introduced on The Loaning in Motherwell after the 12-year-old’s tragic death in 2019.

But Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Thomas Duris ignored the speed restrictions in an effort to get away from the police.

Duris, 27, of Hamilton, appeared from custody and admitted driving dangerously in April last year while on bail for another matter.

The court heard that officers in an unmarked police car signalled for his Audi to stop shortly before midnight.

Duris put on his hazard lights and pulled into the side of the road.

Police officers produced warrant cards as they approached to speak to him, but he accelerated away and his car went into a wheel spin before he turned into Logans Road.

The officers followed and noted that Duris drove at excessive speed and in an “aggressive” manner through streets in the area.

Eventually, he returned to The Loaning before turning on to Hamilton Road.

The police lost sight of him, but traced him later.

Defence agent Elspeth Forrest said Duris didn’t realise the men who approached him from an unmarked car were police officers.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre called for a criminal justice social work report and deferred sentence until next month.
