Driver caught in Hamilton five times over the drink limit narrowly avoids jail

A driver caught in Hamilton while five times over the drink limit narrowly avoided jail this week.

Police called to Low Waters Road found John O’Raw’s car in a “bizarre” position.

Morag McLintock, prosecuting, told Hamilton Sheriff Court that officers were concerned for the driver’s safety.

She added: “He was asked to leave the vehicle and started staggering.”

O’Raw, 45, of Quarry Avenue, Cambuslang, admitted driving while over the limit and without insurance on May 9.

A defence agent said O’Raw has a drink problem that he is keen to address.

Sheriff Moira MacKenzie said prison was a realistic option given the high alcohol reading, but she was persuaded to impose a community payback order instead.

O’Raw will be supervised for two years and must do 200 hours of unpaid community work.

The sheriff banned him from driving for three years and imposed a three-month electronic tagging order that prevents him leaving home between 7pm and 7am each day.
