Driver caught drinking at the wheel while travelling on motorway

A driver was caught drinking alcohol behind the wheel of his car on the M6 by an 'eagle-eyed' stranger.

The man was pulled over by police near to the Thelwall Viaduct between junction 20 and 21 of the motorway in Warrington on Monday.

It came after he was spotted driving "all over the road" and with a drink in his hand by a member of the public.

North West Motorway Police said the man, who also had a passenger in the car at the time of the incident, was removed from the road and arrested.

A police spokesperson tweeted: "Driver arrested for drink driving following an eagle eyed member of the public spotting this car all over the road and the driver drinking at the wheel!

"Sadly his passenger was upset with our services, feeling it ridiculous and dangerous that we now leave him stranded after we have took him off the motorway to then make his way home.

"Strange really, when happy to be in a car where the driver is getting ever increasingly more under the influence of alcohol on a motorway!"
