Driver banned after speeding down M74 motorway in Glasgow at 110mph

A driver has been banned from the road for going at 110mph and almost causing an accident.

Afaq Ahmad, 22, was clocked on the M74 motorway when police caught him speeding close to Cambuslang, near Glasgow on April 20, 2020.

He pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Sat Vingh said: “Police officers were stationed on the M74 and observed a Vauxhall Astra going at an excessive speed.”

“Police followed closely and clocked his speed at above 110mph on the road.

"He then began to go between the three lanes without signalling and crossed white solid lines, narrowly avoiding a collision and had to do an emergency stop.”

The police eventually stopped him on the motorway and he was arrested.

Tracy Paterson, defending: “He regrets his actions and wants to resolve this as fast as possible."

Sheriff Neil MacKinnon told Ahmad: "This is a serious offence."

Ahmad from Simshill was sentenced to a £515 fine and a 17-month driving ban.

A previous version of this article reported that the incident took place on April 20, 2021, and that Afaq Ahmad was sentenced to a 17 month driving ban. This is incorrect. In fact, the incident took place on April 20, 2020, and Ahmad received a 12 month ban. We are happy to clarify this.
