Driver 'bails' from car after crash before collapsing in street

Dramatic video footage taken last night showed the aftermath of a car smashing into railings in Walton.

Onlookers can be heard saying the driver "bailed" from the scene of the incident, which left debris strewn across the road in Breeze Hill, near Rice Lane.

He was later found collapsed on nearby Peveril Street and taken to hospital.

Emergency services descended on the scene shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

A man can be heard saying on the video that the driver of the Audi car "bailed" and was found lying on the ground a short distance away.

He said with reference to the car that "the front end had gone" and that fuel was leaking onto the road.

This morning the damaged railings were clearly visible on Breeze Hill, with temporary traffic barriers marking the scene.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We were contacted at 11.55pm last night, Wednesday December 29, following reports an Audi had been in collision with the central reservation on Breeze Hill/Queens Drive, Walton.

"A male left the scene but was found collapsed on Peveril Street and taken to hospital.

"Enquiries into the collision are ongoing."
