KANPUR: A driver and an attendant were killed after their truck crashed into a stationary truck along the Bundelkhand Expressway in Orai in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The bodies of both were stuck in the mangled remains of the truck. The Police and Expressway Picket team had a tough time removing them.
The police identified the deceased as Sheikh Husain (28), a driver and Maan Singh (25), an attendant of Jaadpur village under Pihani police station of Hardoi district.
The driver of the gravel laden truck however managed to flee the spot along with the vehicle.
Station House Officer Kuthaund Akhilesh Kumar Dubey said that the accident took place at around 7 am, when a truck carrying a consignment of dust was heading towards Auraiya from Chitrakoot, when it crashed into a gravel-loaded stationary truck at 223 mile stone near Tatarpur village of Jalaun at Bundelkhand Expressway.
A police official said the accident occurred because of the truck's high speed and its driver could have dozed off.
"When we reached the spot, we found the bodies of the two stuck inside the badly destroyed cabin of the truck," he said.
He said the police had to use a cutter and a JCB to take out the bodies.
"The victims suffered grievous injuries and they died on the spot," he said.
"It took almost one-and-a-half hours to recover the bodies and send them for post-mortem to a government hospital," he said and added, "Searches are underway to nail down the driver of the gravel-laden truck."
