Driver arrested on suspicion of abducting child after M5 police crash

A driver who crashed into a police car on the M5 was arrested on suspicion of abducting a child, it has emerged.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary took part in a police chase along the motorway last night (August 5) as they acted on behalf of Staffordshire Police.

A police car then overturned near junction 21 northbound and an officer was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Just before 9.40pm, a 27-year-old driver was arrested.

Staffordshire Police have now confirmed he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and on suspicion of abduction of a child. A child who was in the car was uninjured but taken to hospital as a precaution.

Following the collision, the northbound carriageway of the M5 was closed between J21 (Weston-super-Mare) and J19 (Portishead) until around 8am this morning (August 6).

The abduction arrest was made in connection with offences reported in Tamworth, Staffordshire, yesterday.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has any information about the manner of driving of a black Ford Focus in the moments beforehand, can get in touch through www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, reference 5219179902.
