Driver arrested on M6 after being spotted at New Year's Eve party with 30 mates

A driver spotted flouting coronavirus restrictions with 30 other people was arrested.

North West Motorway Police stopped the person in the early hours of New Year's Day after they were seen at an illegal gathering miles away from home.

They were arrested by traffic police on the M6 and tested positive for cannabis use.

The force tweeted: "So you decide to party miles away from your home address with 30 or more of your mates.

"Police turn up so you drive off - observations passed and old eagled eyed HT76 spots you joining the M6 - stopped and arrested for a positive Drug Wipe - Cannabis."

Greater Manchester Police had to break up a rave, several house parties and fined a pub £1,000 for continuing to serve despite the tier four lockdown on New Year's Eve.

GMP said more than 100 fixed penalty notices were handed out to people flouting the rules.

A 'large rave-type event' attended by about 40 revellers was shut down in Ince, Wigan, with lighting DJ equipment and heaters being seized.

A pub in Marble Bridge was fined £1,000 for continuing to serve drinkers despite tier four rules meaning boozers have to close.

Fines were handed out after police were called to large parties in Wigan, Fallowfield, Didsbury, Stockport, Radcliffe and Droylsden.

Police were also called to reports of a large fight after about 30 people attended a party in the city centre.
