Driver arrested following Blantyre road crash that left cyclist seriously injured

A 34-year-old man has been arrested in charged in connection with a road crash which left a 50-year-old cyclist seriously injured.

NHS worker Mark Richards, from East Kilbride, ended up in hospital with spinal fractures after an incident in Blantyre on April 24.

The 50-year-old cyclist was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with 'serious injuries'.

His wife Carol later shared a public appeal to trace the person responsible.

Today, Police Scotland confirmed an arrest has been made.

A force spokesperson said: “A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a road crash on Spittal Terrace, near to Hamilton Road, Blantyre, in which a 50-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured.

“The incident happened on Saturday, April 24 2021. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
