A driver has been arrested after crashing into an ambulance in a late night smash.
The car struck the ambulance as it was carrying a patient, police said in the early hours of this morning.
A shocking image shared by Merseyside Police shows the passenger door of the ambulance smashed in, while the car has mounted the central reservation as a result of the impact.
Glass and debris can be seen strewn across the road - along with a lone wheelchair.
Police confirmed that the paramedics and patient were unharmed in the crash.
The driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving, said police.
On a tweet at 2.45am this morning, the Merseyside Road Policing Unit said the "ambulance, which is now off the road for repair... was carrying a patient at the time".
"I’m sure you all share our frustration with this one."
