Driver arrested after car overturns on M56

A motorist has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash on the M56 west of Manchester Airport.

A car overturned on the westbound carriageway of the M56 near junction 9 at the Lymm interchange/M6 in the early hours of Friday.

Traffic was stopped temporarily between junction 9 and junction 8 at the Bowdon, Altrincham and A556 interchange.

North West Motorway Police attended the incident.

Writing on Twitter, officers said the driver was located a short time after the crash, allegedly trying to leave the scene.

They said he is now in custody after reportedly failing a drug test.

North West Motorway Police tweeted an image showing a white BMW crumpled after the crash.

Police said: "Thankfully nobody was injured."

The road was reopened to traffic by 3.15am, Highways England said.
