Driver and passengers flee high speed crash after driving on the wrong side of the road

Four men fled the scene of a crash after the vehicle they were in slammed "head on" into another car being driven by an elderly man.

A witness said they think the black VW Golf reached speeds between 70-80mph while being driven on the wrong side of Blackburn Road in Bolton

It collided with the other vehicle at around 9.45pm just outside the Cross Guns Inn.

Both cars were badly damaged but the driver of the speeding vehicle, along with three passenger, immediately climbed out and ran from the scene.

The older man is said to have been "shaken up" by the experience but luckily escaped with no serious injuries.

Police are investigating the crash but no arrests have been made.

"There was a car with around four white men in it, going between 70 and 80mph on the wrong side of the road, it hit another car head on," an eyewitness explained.

"The men in the speeding car ran from the scene, one of then with chest injuries and all were seemingly very drunk, backed up by the alcohol bottles and tinnies in their hands and in and around the car."

She went on to explain that the elderly man involved in the crash was treated at the scene by two nurses who lived nearby and had heard what happened.

"He was originally very shocked and lying on the road - we put blankets on him and gave him cushions to lean on while we waited for paramedics - luckily two neighbours are nurses and gave him initial checks," the witness explained.

"In the end, about an hour after the crash, the man was OK to get up and walk to the paramedics car."

The four men ran down Blackburn Road towards Bolton.
