Driver and passenger cut out of car after being seriously injured in Fenham crash

A driver and passenger had to be cut out of a car after being seriously injured in a crash in Newcastle.

Emergency services, including 12 firefighters , were called to Brighton Grove in Fenham just before 11pm on Friday.

Two people had become trapped in a Mazda car after a collision with a Citroen.

The occupants of the Citroen had left the area before emergency services arrived, according to the fire service.

Cutting equipment was used by the fire crews, from Colby Court and Byker stations, to remove the doors of the Mazda.

The driver and rear seat passenger were assisted out by paramedics and were taken to the Royal Victoria Infimary (RVI) by ambulance.

The Mazda driver suffered suspected leg injuries while the passenger had suspected open fractures, head and pelvic injuries.

A front seat passenger had managed to get out of the car unaided but was also taken to the RVI for treatment for injuries to the pelvis.

It is not currently known if any arrests have been made in connection with the crash.
