Driver and his dog rescued from river after trying to drive through water

A driver and his dog had to be pulled from the water after their vehicle became submerged while apparently trying to cross a river.

The red Suzuki became trapped in the depths of the River Almond in Scotland on Saturday afternoon.

The driver was forced to get help after the vehicle became stuck with a French bulldog still inside, the Daily Record reports.

Photographs taken from a footpath nearby appear to show the driver behind the wheel of the car, before getting out and wading into the water.

He was spotted desperately trying to attach tow cables to the front of the stricken vehicle so another motorist could pull it free.

A passer-by took photos of the rescue of the stranded motorist (Alamy Live News.)

The passer-by, who did not want to be named said: "It looked as though they had already attempted to pull the car backwards onto the bank but it hadn't worked, so they attached a rope onto the front of the vehicle instead and with the help of a 4x4 on the other side, they pulled the car out.

"There was nobody hurt or anything thankfully, and that's the main thing."

The eye-witness added that they weren't sure why he tried to cross in the first place as the river levels seemed quite high after the recent snow melt.

It is unclear if emergency services attended the rescue or not.

Both Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Services told the Record that they had not received any calls about any incidents on the river at that time.

Flooding has battered the UK in recent weeks and there are further warnings currently in place today.

The Environment Agency now has 77 flood warnings in place, as well as 188 less serious flood alerts in England.

Severe weather warnings for snow are also in place for large areas of Scotland as well as other parts of the UK until Wednesday.
