Driver accused of killing sister of Socceroos star Awer Mabil allegedly had MDMA in his system

Ms Mabil was killed when the car she was in hit a fence.

Prosecutors have alleged the driver accused of causing the death of Bor Mabil — the sister of Socceroos star Awer Mabil — had alcohol and drugs in his system at the time.

Ms Mabil, 19, was one of five people in a car that crashed into a fence at Andrews Farm, in Adelaide's north, in January.

She died at the scene and three other passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 12:30am on a Saturday morning, just hours before her brother Awer Mabil took to the field for the Socceroos in the Asian Cup quarter-finals.

The driver, 19-year-old Akol Agui Akol, was charged with aggravated causing death by dangerous driving.

During a brief hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, prosecutors said it would be alleged that Mr Akol had alcohol and MDMA in his system at the time of the fatal crash.

Magistrate Brett Dixon granted a prosecution request for more time to compile their case against the accused because "significant material" was still outstanding.

The court heard prosecutors were still waiting on a post-mortem report, statements from investigating officers and a "major crime reconstruction".

Mr Akol has been in custody since his arrest in January and is yet to apply for bail.

The driver of a second car, which police said at the time was "travelling in company" with the first car when it crashed, was also charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The 18-year-old woman from Gawler West will face court tomorrow, while Mr Akol was remanded in custody to appear in court again on July 16.

Mabil family fled South Sudan

Family spokesman Manyok Ajak Mabil made a short statement to the media after the crash earlier this year, expressing the family's sadness.

"We as family and friends of Bor Mabil grieve at this time," he said.

"Bor was a great daughter and young woman with a great life ahead of her."

Ms Mabil's family fled South Sudan and arrived in Australia as refugees in 2006.

Awer Mabil, 23, grew up in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, but later moved with his family to Adelaide's northern suburbs.

He made his debut for Adelaide United in 2012.

The A-League club also paid tribute to Ms Mabil earlier this year, sending its "sincerest condolences" to her family.

Awer Mabil later signed with Danish club FC Midtjylland and, at the time of his Socceroos debut last year, Ms Mabil spoke to the ABC about her family's pride.

"When he got the chance to go on it made us really happy," Ms Mabil said.

"He scored his goal which made it even better.

"He would have so much joy knowing he had made his country proud ... and his family and friends happy."
