Driver abandons van after smashing into front garden

A driver crashed into people's front gardens before abandoning their van and running away from police.

The driver of a white Citroen van careered into the front gardens of homes in Rochdale Old Road, Bury, on Sunday evening.

Police rushed to the scene but discovered that the driver had fled the scene - abandoning the van with the lights still on, inches from a resident's front door.

Fences and railings at the front of the homes were mown down and the van's front wheel was left crushed.

The van has been seized by police and is currently "awaiting forensic examination".

In a tweet, Greater Manchester Traffic Police said: " #XT18 attended single vehicle RTC Rochdale Road Bury.

"Driver decided to run away before police arrival.

"Vehicle recovered awaiting forensic examination."
