Driver, 90, rescued after car crashes into the River Forth in Stirling

A 90-year-old man was rescued from a car after it crashed and ended up in the River Forth.

It is understood that two passers-by tried to rescue the driver of the blue hatchback as the emergency services arrived at the scene.

A Riverside resident told the Stirling Observer it appeared that the vehicle had ploughed through a fence onto the grass river embankment near Queen’s Haugh Drive by Riverside Bowling Club.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland arrived at the scene following the incident which occurred around 11.30am.

Police confirmed the driver was rescued from the water and taken to hospital.

A resident said: “The whole area has been taped off. There is quite a presence of emergency vehicles. A section of metal railing about 15ft has been damaged.

“You can see the tyre tracks on the grass embankment.”

The driver is thought to have been the only occupant of the vehicle.

Following the rescue, the car could be seen in the river almost totally submerged and floating downstream, 50ft from the scene, on the outgoing tide.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 11.10am on Tuesday, April 20, we received a report of a car in the water in the Riverside Drive area of Stirling. Emergency services attended and the sole occupant of the vehicle, a 90-year-old man, was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The vehicle is being recovered from the water."
