Driver, 62, dies after falling ill at the wheel on M74

A driver has died after falling ill at the wheel in Glasgow.

The 62-year-old man pulled over at the Polmadie slip road on the M74 near junction 1A and the B763.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

The man was raced to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Daily Record)

The driver was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital .

Police confirmed that he later died.

A spokesperson from the force told the record: "We were called to a medical matter at 15.20pm.

"A 62-year-old man has been taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

"Sadly the man has died due to a medical issue.

"He was the driver and pulled over having taken unwell.

"A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Police Scotland closed the section of motorway down just ahead of rush hour.  

Traffic Scotland tweeted to confirm that the road has now reopened.

They said: "#M74 J1A Entry slip road is now OPEN".
