Independent SAGE, a group of scientists set up to mirror the Government advisory group, has said “sensible protections” are needed to prevent a surge triggering another winter lockdown.
It has issued a nine-point plan including demanding the reintroduction of mandatory mask wearing indoors, more financial support for people to self isolate and the right to work from home where possible for all workers.
Prof Stephen Reicher said: “Last year the Government failed to heed SAGE warnings in September and let the pandemic run so far out of control that by November, severe restrictions were necessary. They are in danger of making the same mistake.”
