Drive in cinema to launch outdoor film and theatre events at Enfield's Troubadour Meridian Water this summer

A new series of drive-in film screenings and live experiences is being launched in Enfield this summer, as new venture The Drive In launches at the Troubadour Meridian Water from July 4.

Film fans can pitch up in their cars for the events, with films shown on a large screen and the sound piped in via radio. The screenings will adhere to social distancing restrictions, with cars parked two metres apart and tickets scanned through closed windows. There will be toilet facilities made available, too, cleaned between uses.

Films announced so far include La La Land, Bad Boys for Life, Dirty Dancing and The Terminator, with tickets on sale now. While the movies themselves are a mix of recent releases and old favourites, the experience itself will lean into the history of drive-in, with food and drink orders delivered by attendants dressed in 50s-style costumes.

Besides films, there are plans for stand-up and live music, and screenings of pre-recorded theatre.

The Drive In becomes the latest group to organise social distancing film screenings in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, following the likes of The Luna Drive-In and At the Drive In.

The Leader of Enfield Council, Councillor Nesil Caliskan, said: “This is great news for the borough and residents of Edmonton. A drive-in cinema at Meridian Water, which will only open once all safety concerns have been considered and addressed, will give people the opportunity to enjoy a leisure activity during this difficult time. Free tickets will be made available for our heroic NHS and care workers.

“The initiative will help kick-start the local economy and accelerate the expansion of commercial and leisure activities in the East of the borough.”
