Drive-in cinema operators in plea for Scottish Government to allow events in level 3 areas

Drive-in cinema operators from across Scotland have issued a plea for the events to be allowed in Level 3 local authority areas.

itison and the people behind The Parking Lot Social are calling for the Scottish Government to reclassify drive-ins events.

Under the current rules, the outdoor events are only allowed under level 2. Members of the public living in a level 3 or 4 area are not permitted to travel outwith their local authority area to attend.

In a joint statement operators including 21CC Group, INDY Cinema, itison, Unique Events and XL Event Lab have said that 420 creative sector jobs will be lost and 18,000 families will face “an even bleaker winter and Christmas period, as the Scottish Government has not followed suit with their counterparts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in allowing drive-in activities to take place in in far harsher equivalent tiers”.

The statement goes on to say: “With hundreds of thousands of Scots now allowed inside indoor hospitality and retail, there is no logic to delivering a further hammer blow to Scotland’s creative sector.”

The group have said that drive-ins are "recognised globally as safe activities by clinicians" as they require households to stay within their bubble in a “highly controlled outdoor environment”.

Scotland's biggest cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh remain under level 3 restrictions with another review to be announced tomorrow.

Nicola Sturgeon previously said that she would hope any changes announced on Tuesday would remain in place throughout the Christmas period.

'Cautious easing' of restrictions came into force across Glasgow on Friday including the reopening of non-essential retail, hospitality and visitor attractions.
