Drive-by delight as Ayr gran celebrates beating cervical cancer

A gran celebrated beating cervical cancer with a surprise drive-by from friends and family.

Eleanor Lawrie, 51, was surprised by loved ones who drove by her home in Forehill, Ayr honking their horns, cheering and clapping while Eleanor rang out her bell to signify the end of her eight-month battle with cancer.

The gran-of-two, who has been shielding because of coronarvius, then celebrated with a socially distanced afternoon tea with family in her back garden.

Daughter Cassie Bolland, 28, told the Post: “I gave up my job and moved in with her as soon as she was diagnosed.

“She had to shield completely so she’s had a bit of a time with it.

“In September one night she just took no well and she got taken into the hospital.

“It was very quick and she got diagnosed with cervical cancer.

“I think she’s been very lucky- it’s a miracle really.

Eleanor, who used to work at the BP garage opposite Ayr Train Station, underwent treatment to kill off the cancer including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a new brachytherapy which she had to be rendered unconscious for.

Cassie said: “She’s had complete complications with it all- we’ve touched and go so many times.

“She’s been through a lot.

Now the family, including granddaughter Bailey, 10, and seven-year-old grandson Radley, are celebrating the news Eleanor is cancer free.

And Cassie, along with her mum, is now reinforcing the importance of getting a smear test.

She said: “Being honest I’ve skipped my smear tests in the past but it’s not until it happens to someone you know that you really think.

“I’ve been trying to bring more awareness to it and then COVID happened.

“But it’s been a great outcome and I’m so pleased.”
