'I totally despair' - city centre fountain vandalised just months after being installed

A public drinking fountain in the city centre has been vandalised just months after it was first installed.

Footage shared on Twitter on September 21 shows the fountain knocked over as a jet of water is sprayed onto College Green.

Many reacted with anger to the video, with one person commenting: "How horrible to ruin water fountains though. Plenty of people don’t have access."

Another said: "Honestly what is the matter with people....I totally despair!"

The fountain was installed as part of a campaign to reduce single-use plastic, spearheaded by City to Sea, a Bristol-based organisation campaigning for the end of plastic pollution.

In total, Bristol Water installed eight public drinking fountains around the centre,  in partnership with  Bristol City Council  and Bristol Waste.

The first fountain was officially unveiled on College Green as part of National Refill Day (June 19).

Bristol Water said the fountains would prevent 50 miles of plastic bottle waste and save local people half a million pounds a year, versus bottled alternatives.
