Drink spilled, woman stabbed

Newcastle courthouse.

WHEN someone at a Cessnock pub spilled a drink on her boyfriend's shoes, triggering a brawl, Katrina Weeks told a security guard "that bitch is going to cop it" and flashed a small flat-bladed knife.

"I'm going to flog that bitch there in the red," Weeks told security as she was being kicked out of the pub.

Then, some time later, when the woman walked from the hotel, Weeks, 34, immediately ran towards her, the knife in her right hand and stabbed her at least five times in the face, ear, neck, back and shoulder.

Weeks was represented by solicitor Donna Smith when she appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday via audio visual link from jail and pleaded guilty to wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She will next appear in Newcastle District Court next week to get a sentence date.

Weeks and her boyfriend were at Peden's Hotel in Vincent Street, Cessnock after midnight on May 5 last year when a fight broke out, according to an agreed statement of facts.

The altercation started because someone spilled a drink on Weeks' boyfriend's shoes.

A security guard kicked out Weeks's boyfriend and then when he was escorting Weeks out she told him she planned to "flog" one of the women from the other group.

"No you are not, you need to leave," the security guard told Weeks.

Weeks and her boyfriend waited outside the pub for some time, during which Weeks told the security guard the woman was "going to cop it" and pulled a knife out from inside her bra.

The pair then left in a car, but returned 15 minutes later when Weeks was described as being "off her head".

Weeks got out of the car and was talking to friends about what happened, waving an object around in her hand and repeatedly looking at the door to the hotel.

At 1.16am, the victim walked out of the hotel and Weeks immediately turned and ran towards her, a knife clearly visible in her right hand.

She stabbed the victim at least five times before the victim pushed her away and started punching her.

Security tried to break up the fight and the victim had hold of Weeks until she heard someone say "[victim's name], you've been f---ing stabbed. Let go."

Weeks fled in a car and later told her family: "I've really f---ed up. I stabbed a girl 10 times last night. I don't know how bad I hurt her. I stabbed her in the face 10 times."
