Drink driving warning issued by police following crash

Police in Mid Ulster have issued a warning about drink driving saying they are "catching high numbers on a weekly basis".

In recent days one male was arrested following a crash in which they said they wondered how no one was killed, while another person suspected to be under the influence of drink or drugs had a car seized.

PSNI Mid Ulster shared a picture of the crash on Sunday night saying: "Another night and yet another drunk driver arrested, crews are currently picking up the pieces of this mess on the Magherafelt Road.

"Thankfully no one was killed, although you do wonder how. As well as drunk he doesn't have a full driving licence so shouldn't be on the road. He's been arrested for motoring offences as well as for the drink driving.

"We're still catching high numbers of drunk drivers on a weekly basis, individuals who clearly care little for the lives of friends, family or neighbours. Wise up."

Another car was damaged following another incident late on Sunday into the early hours of Monday.

Police said on Monday morning: "Earlier we had a drunk on his roof, crews out patrolling have just caught another one, this time he was going sideways. Attempted to make off on foot across the fields but was no match for the dog.

"Hunted and found, another drunk into the cells. He's also been arrested for a multitude of driving offences along with the drink driving. Wise up."

In relation to the seizure of a car on Sunday afternoon, they said: "Another one of our loyal customers back in the cells, again, after he made off in a car, again. Lengthy searches during the night located him hiding in a house. The car was also located and seized.

"Arrested for a range of offences yet again including, dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, no insurance, no driving licence... the list goes on. Off to court, again.

"Some people never learn. If you continually put people's lives at risk and break the law we will continually watch and arrest you every step of the way. You can run but you can't hide."
