Drink driving bank worker 'didn't enjoy sitting with the criminals in court'

A drink driver's solicitor admitted her client had not really enjoyed coming to court.

Santander employee Leona McDonald was almost three times the drink-drive limit when she hit another car.

She pleaded guilty to drink driving at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court.

But her brief Jonathan Cousins admitted coming to court had "weighed heavily upon her".

"She's very much not enjoyed having to wait in the waiting area," he said in mitigation.

The boozy bank worker crashed her VW Tiguan into another vehicle on Moor Farm Roundabout, in Cramlington, on April 14.

The crash was described as "minor", but police were called to the scene where they breathlysed and arrested the 32-year-old.

At Thursday's hearing, Ms McDonald was handed a two year driving ban for her "extremely poor decision" to drive.

What happens after a crime is reported?

But the two-man bench fined her rather than impose a community order after hearing she had a "caring responsibly" to her family, including her sick mother.

"She has to take both her children to school, and they go to different schools, and also has to drive up to hospital appointments for her mum," added her solicitor.

The defendant, of Willow Grove, Backworth, was fined £723 for the offence.
