Drink driver's car rolled down hill as police tapped on window

Driver Jamie Wright had one foot on the brake pedal when slumped at the wheel of a car parked in the middle of a road.

Police officers tapped on the window and roused him - only for the vehicle to roll down the hill, a court heard.

They had to smash the window and managed to halt the vehicle on Spring Lane, said Gwok Wan, prosecuting.

Wright, 28, failed a breath test after the incident at 6.40am on February 2. At a police station, he gave a reading of 66 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, 31 over the limit.

Bianca Brasoveanu, mitigating, told the court: "There was very little driving involved.

"He was not immediately responsive but in custody he was described as calm, polite and co-operative during the provision of the breath sample.

"He is deeply sorry and ashamed by this offence.

"He is a young man who has made some mistakes," said Miss Brasoveanu for Wright of Grimston Road, Nottingham.

Wright has gained qualifications to work on building sites and hopes to get on courses to operate cranes and diggers, she added.

A 38-month driving ban was imposed on Wright who pleaded guilty to drink driving. He was fined £120 with £117 costs.
