Drink driver ran red lights while front tyres were detached from car

A drink driver who drove while both front tyres were completely detached from his car narrowly avoided a jail sentence.

Brian Douglas, 62, was almost three times the limit when he drove at excessive speed and ran red lights throughout Ayr including Dunure Road, Racecourse Road, Miller Road and Holmston Road on May 8.

Douglas had 60 microgrammes of alcohol in his system, exceeding the legal limit of 22 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.

His dangerous driving spree came to a halt when he lost control of his car and stuck a roundabout.

Douglas also failed to stop for police constable Sandy McBreen.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie put Douglas, of Paisley, under supervision for 18 months and ordered him to do 150 hours of unpaid work within six months.

Douglas was also banned from driving for a year and must sit the extended test before getting behind the wheel again.
