Drink driver panicked and sprinted along a road when he saw police

A drink-driver panicked and sprinted along a road when he saw police, a court heard.

Max Bradley, 28, of Chapel Lane, Epperstone, was on a section of the A6097 Epperstone By-Pass in a black BMW at around 10pm on May 8.

Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard it was an unsafe area to stop, according to a police officer's statement, which drew his attention.

The driver's side door swung open and Bradley got out and looked at the officer in panic and turned and sprinted along the road. A woman also got out of the car.

A police dog was deployed and Bradley was detained a short distance away smelling of alcohol.

Bradley went on to plead guilty to drink-driving when he had 97 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, over the limit of 35.

Jim Buckley, mitigating, said there was an "element of panic in the defendant's behaviour".

District Judge Leo Pyle told Bradley "what aggravates this matter is you have a similar high excess alcohol conviction".

He imposed a community order for 15 months, 200 hours of unpaid work, and imposed a three-year driving disqualification.

Bradley was offered a drink-drive rehabilitation course and, if completed, it would knock 25 percent off the driving disqualification.

A victim surcharge of £95 must be paid as well as £85 prosecution costs.
