Drink driver left Cheltenham Races only to crash and write car off

A man was caught drink-driving after crashing his car and writing it off, on his way home from Cheltenham Races.

Callum McKay, aged 20, of St John's Lane, Bristol has pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates court on Monday (Nov 11) to driving with excess alcohol on his breath.

Callum's wallet and mobile phone were stolen at Cheltenham Races shortly before he then crashed his car and wrote it off on the way home and was then arrested for drink-driving.

Said prosecuting lawyer May Li said: "It was 1:09am on October 27 when police were alerted to a collision on the A38 Walton Cardiff, Tewkesbury.

"They found the defendant's VW Scirocco extensively damaged but nobody was with the vehicle."

Police noticed a BMW circling the area and when they stopped the vehicle the defendant was in the passenger seat, the court was told.

"Mr McKay appeared to be intoxicated and he failed a road side breath test," said Ms Li

Harvey had 68 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 35 micrograms.

Defending lawyer Nichola Shaw said: "He had been to the races, drunk five pints and gone back to a friend's home for three hours to sober up.

"But his wallet and mobile phone were stolen at the races and he used the phone for SatNav. Without it he got lost and clipped a roundabout, crashing the vehicle.

"He just wanted to get home and this was a momentary loss of concentration."

McKay has been banned from driving for 18 months, fined £280 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs.
