Drink driver from Worksop jailed following collision that left trio with life-changing injuries

A drink driver who collided with three pedestrians - including a police officer - has been jailed after leaving them with life-changing injuries.

Karolina Serafin, from Worksop, was driving a Renault Megane when it mounted the pavement and collided with the three people in Wakefield city centre, West Yorkshire.

The injured male police officer was dealing with a separate incident when the collision took place.

A male pedestrian and a female pedestrian were also struck by the car with all three being left with life-changing injuries.

Serafin admitted three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing at Leeds Crown Court.

The 25-year-old was jailed for three years and eight months after appearing before the court to be sentenced today (Monday 8th November, 2021).

Speaking after the hearing, PC Neil Clark of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team said: “I welcome the sentence handed down by the court today.

“This motorist’s dangerous actions while over double the drink drive limit took place on a busy weekend night in Wakefield city centre and has led to three innocent people suffering serious and life changing injuries. It will affect them for the rest of their lives.”

“I hope that today’s sentencing will send a message to anyone who takes to our roads, and particularly so as we get closer to the festive period, that getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs has a serious impact on people’s lives – and for that there must be serious consequences.”

She has also been banned from driving for seven years and 10 months with a requirement to take an extended driving test.
