Drink driver disqualified after crashing car in Kilmarnock with child on board

A man who drove while four times the legal alcohol limit and crashed his car with a child on board has been disqualified from driving.

Christopher Reid, 32, admitted being behind the wheel on June 22 with a child in the back seat and crashing the vehicle, causing the youngster unnecessary suffering, at Cameron Drive in Kilmarnock.

Reid, formerly of Fergushill Road, Kilwinning but now living in Mair Avenue, Dalry, North Ayrshire also admitted giving a reading of 89 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 22mg.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that at around 4pm Reid attended a woman’s home where children were present.

Two hours later he began drinking alcohol and soon after the woman left to take the children elsewhere.

One of the children did not want to go and was left under the care of Reid.

At some point in the evening the child with Reid phoned the woman and said he was in a car. As a result, the woman contacted police.

At 1.30am police went to Cameron Drive and found Reid in his bare feet, standing on the pavement next to his car. They also saw a child in the rear seat and damage to the car.

Also present were two witnesses who had Reid’s car keys. They were alerted to an incident after hearing a bang. They looked outside and saw Reid. The pair ran outside and when they opened the car door they smelt alcohol and saw the child in the back.

A roadside breath test was carried out which Reid failed. He was arrested and taken to Kilmarnock police station, where he gave a breath sample.

He was cautioned and charged and made no response.

Defending, Neil McPherson explained that Reid was “very drunk, with bare feet and has no real explanation for why he was going out in the car”.

He added: “Fortunately nothing catastrophic happened.”

Reid will be sentenced on April 30 and has been disqualified from driving.
