Drink driver caught out after McDonald's drive-thru staff suspected she was drunk

A drink driver was found slumped in her car after being reported to police by McDonald's staff.

Chloe May, 20, was more than two times over the drink driver limit when officers found her on Newcastle Road in South Shields .

May, who is studying at The University of Sunderland, pleaded guilty to drink driving at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

The court heard May had been on a night out and had around six cocktails to drink.

May got a taxi home but "must have fancied a McDonald's", the court was told, and drove to the outlet at Tower's Place.

It was then concerned staff contact police about a woman trying to use the drive-thru, Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said.

She added: "On police arrival a person was found slumped in the front of a Fiat 500 motor vehicle."

Ms Beck said May, of Tynemouth Road, Jarrow, was found in the car, wearing her seatbelt and the engine was still running.

May failed a breath test with 81 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Jason Smith, defending, said: "The young lady has never had a problem with anyone in her life, this is something she will have to live with.

"It is something she deeply regrets. It is a case of drink in, common sense out.

"She made her mistake, she will learn from her mistake."

May was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £237.
