Drink driver caught by police doing 'handbrake turn' to get to Tyneside takeaway

A drink driver was caught revving his engine and doing a "handbrake turn" in the middle of a road to get to a takeaway.

Mark Corry had been at a friend's house and had downed a couple of shots of Jack Daniel's before he decided to get behind the wheel to travel home.

But the 43-year-old came to the attention of officers shortly after midnight as he made his way down North Parade, in Whitley Bay.

A court heard that Corry "excessively revved" the engine of his Toyota Celica before he was seen to "performing a handbrake turn" outside a takeaway.

Now, Corry, of Upper Elsdon Street, North Shields, has been banned from driving for 12 months after he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol during a hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor, Clare Irving, said police first noticed Corry at around 12.30am on October 26 and followed him.

She added: "Their attention is drawn to the defendant's vehicle as he is revving the engine excessively.

"He's observed on North Parade and the vehicle is seen to pull a handbrake turn, coming to rest outside a takeaway."

Police spoke to Corry and he smelled of booze, the court heard.

He later gave a breathalyser reading of 55 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

David Parish, defending, said Corry had been out with friends all day but had been the designated driver, so hadn't been drinking.

"He drops his friends off and is persuaded to go in for a couple of drinks," Mr Parish added."He's then chanced it and driven home, despite his friends telling him to get a taxi."

Mr Parish also said Corry denied doing a handbrake turn but claimed his car had skidded.

Magistrates also fined Corry £120 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
