Drink driver, 45, who smiled in mugshot after fatal crash jailed for 11 years

A driver who flashed a big grin in her mugshot after killing a mother-of-three in a car crash has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Angenette Marie Welk, 45, wept in court as she apologised to the victim's family and expressed remorse for her actions.

She was also fined $5,000 (£3,931) and given 15 years of probation after pleading no contest to a charge of driving under influence manslaughter.

Officials said Welk, who married days after the fatal crash, had a blood alcohol level of 0.189 when she ploughed into 60-year-old Sandra Clarkston's vehicle in last May at 73 mph.

The impact caused Ms Clarkston to slam into the back of a semi-trailer truck, reported Click Orlando.

Ms Clarkston died in the hospital after undergoing several operations, which left her left-side paralysed and brain dead, said family members.

Inspectors later found an empty vodka bottle in Welk's car.

Welk, from Ocala, Florida, explained in court: "Moments before the collision, my phone slipped out of my hands and I saw a car and I swerved."

She said she had consumed alcohol due to stress but said she felt fine, according to reports.

Welk made headlines because of her relaxed, grinning mugshot which was taken after the crash.

Her attorney said there was a reason she was smiling in the mugshot.

Asked how does she act when she gets nervous, Welk said: "I smile and giggle."

During the sentence hearing on Thursday, Welk told the court: "I would like to start by saying how sorry I am for this tragic loss.

"You've lost a mother, a sister, an aunt, a loved one. I don't have the words."

In addition to the sentence and the fine, Welk was ordered to write a letter every year in May saying what she has learned from the crash.
