Drink drive suspect claims unwanted hat-trick after watching England World Cup match in the pub

A suspected drunk driver claimed an unwanted hat-trick after spending a night at the pub watching England beat Wales 3-0 in the World Cup. Police officers, who were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Burtonwood, told how the male motorist was arrested on suspicion of writing off his own car (which he had owned for two days), causing damage to four other parked vehicles and will now "likely lose his licence" to complete a terrible treble.

When breathalysed, the driver, who had only had a licence for less than a month, also produced a reading that was more than four times over the legal drink driving limit. His girlfriend, meanwhile, was also arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly after arguing that her partner should not be detained and then continued to shout and swear in the street — behaviour that a police spokesperson described as "an own goal".

A statement on Warrington Police's official Facebook page read: "Officers were called to Burtonwood to reports of an RTC. Upon our attendance, a male driver (who has had a licence for less than a month) had managed to crash into four parked cars.

"It was not a shock to officers when he blew 91 at the roadside. The male managed to write off his own car (which he had owned for two days), caused damage to residents' cars and will likely lose his licence (I think that's known as a hat-trick).

"Driving home after spending the evening in the pub watching England is not worth the risk to you or other road users. The male's girlfriend disagreed that he should be arrested and decided to kick up a fuss. She was then arrested for being drunk and disorderly after she continued to shout and swear in the street (also known as an own goal!)."
